Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as the “tummy tuck,” is a cosmetic surgery many individuals elect to undergo in pursuit of a more contoured stomach and abdomen. Though the procedure is very common, many people have questions about how this surgery works and what to expect from results. The team at Carolinas Center for Plastic Surgery hopes to answer some of the questions you may have about this cosmetic procedure.

What, How, and Who: Tummy Tuck Surgery

What is tummy tuck surgery? First of all, what exactly is this procedure? The tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to tighten and firm up the abdomen. To achieve a more contoured look, plastic surgeons will remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen through two strategic incisions. Who is a candidate for this procedure? Common candidates for tummy tuck surgery are women who have recently given birth and are experiencing weakness or separation of the central abdominal wall muscles. Other candidates (male and female) include anyone that cannot seem to shed a loose or sagging abdomen through traditional methods like diet and exercise. How does the tummy tuck procedure work? The procedure will require up to two incisions. The first is a horizontal incision in the area between the pubic hairline and belly button. Through this incision, abdominal skin will be lifted, and underlying muscles can be repaired and strengthened. A second incision is necessary when there is excess skin in the upper abdomen. In this step, the upper abdominal skin will be pulled down, and the excess skin trimmed away. What is recovery time like? In most cases, you’ll spend the night following your procedure in the hospital. Patients can typically return home the next day. You will need to be reclined or laying down for the week following the procedure, but most patients can walk the day after surgery and resume light activities within seven to ten days.
